Custom Domains

For $9 per month (billed annually) a Custom Domain subscription gives your tunnel a stable domain and a priority share of bandwidth.

Use your own domain, or a subdomain of lhr.rocks.

Setup

  1. Visit the admin portal.
  2. Add your SSH key to your account — it's how tunnels authenticate.
  3. Add your chosen custom domain.

Own domain? Set up the DNS records below. lhr.rocks subdomain? It's already done — connect immediately.

Then connect a tunnel by adding the domain to the -R argument:

bash
ssh -R yourdomain.com:80:localhost:8080 plan@localhost.run

The plan@ username is optional, but recommended if you have multiple SSH keys.

lhr.rocks subdomains

No DNS setup needed — the quickest route to a stable domain and faster speeds. Names are first come, first served; if yours is taken, try another.

DNS setup for your own domain

After adding the domain, the admin portal shows the records to create at your DNS provider (usually where you bought the domain).

TXT record

Create a TXT record on _lhr.{your domain} with your domain ID as its value. Some providers add quotes automatically — that's fine. Verify with Google's dig tool; you should see something like _lhr.yourdomain.com. 299 IN TXT "<domain id>".

CNAME vs A records

CNAMEs are easiest, but can't live on an apex domain. The apex is the top of the DNS zone you control — not necessarily the TLD:

Your DNS zoneTunnel domainApex?Record
example.comexample.comYesA
example.comtunnel.example.comNoCNAME
jane.example.comjane.example.comYesA
jane.example.comtunnel.jane.example.comNoCNAME

Not sure? Use A records.

Set either a CNAME targeting cd.localhost.run or three A records targeting 54.161.197.247, 54.82.85.249 and 35.171.254.69.

Subdomains

A custom domain on yourdomain.com can also serve any subdomain, like app1.yourdomain.com. Complete the normal setup, then add a CNAME for *.yourdomain.com pointing at cd.localhost.run:

bash
ssh -R app1.yourdomain.com:80:localhost:8081 localhost.run

Note: you can connect up to 5 tunnels at the same time.

Note: the number of subdomains per month is limited by Let's Encrypt certificate limits.

Changing domain

  1. Delete your existing custom domain subscription — the remaining time is credited to your account.
  2. Create a new custom domain subscription — it uses the credit instead of a new payment.

Cancelling

Delete your custom domain. For other billing help email help@localhost.run.
